Direct Costs
*Average Total Costs incurred per year by type or body part, 2003-2004. Source: National Safety Council, Injury Facts 2007 Edition. Please note that these are estimates based on a sample of Workers Compensation claims reported to NCCI and can be volatile from year to year due to the influence of a small but variable number of large claims.
Indirect Costs
Indirect costs are a significant portion of the total loss to the company directly stemming from ergonomic related injury. A Liberty Mutual study noted that 40 percent of managers reported that each $1 of direct cost for injury generated between $3 and $5 of indirect costs. With the nature of these indirect costs ranging from 3-5 times (3-5x) the base claim costs, 3x reflects a more conservative injury and baseline average of indirect costs. In more complicated cases and risk scenarios, depending on the extent and nature of the injury, the indirect costs can dramatically rise to levels in the 4-5x range.
